When I started working on cars 30 years ago I use to pull carbs all the time thinking that was the problem 90% of the time I was wrong.
Spray it down with gumout, check for binding, adjust the air/fuel mixture with a vacuum gauge or a tach. Did you try to adjust the large center screw it brings up the idle.
