You should measure the current draw when you connect the battery to see if indeed it is high enuf to be called a battery drain or a short. Sometimes it may spark when you connect, but the current draw may be temporary or not high enuf to be a problem.
Get a multimeter, start on the 10ADC scale, and with one of the cables off, connect one side of the meter to the battery, the other to the cable. If the value is low enuf, change the meter to the mA scale, (usually 200 or 300 mA), and measure again. Normal will be about 10 to 20 mA or less.
