It's a pretty weird story... I was at the post office, and had a Trans Am t-shirt on. Some guy started talking about the graphics for the 77 SE models, and it turns out he's got 2 (early 70's). He asked what I had in my 75, and I told him 400, but looking for a 455. He told me about the Bonneville that had just arrived @ Pickapart, and that it looked in good condition. It was all just shiz luck. The total cost was 177.45 (CA tax & engine crane rental incl.).
Tore it down last night & this morning.. looks pretty clean. Bearings look okay (no signs of excessive wear or damage). The tops of the pistons are black & full of carbon, but the heads & rest look great. The only problem area seems to be that whoever had the car last, didn't keep the cooling system maintained, as there's a lot of rusty sludge in the water pump/housing.
