Since I never plan to go back to non halogen lights again, I scribed a line around the boot and ground off the excess material with a die grinder and a carbide burr. As I recall, I had to grind off abour 1/4 inch but you should measure the difference between the bulb terminal protrusions to be sure. It worked well and when the boot is installed on the light it looks like the original equipment, if that matters to you. The terminals aligned well.
