This isn't a Pontiac specific problem, it's a simple valvetrain geometry problem. Your machinist did not set up the heads to handle the lift of the cam with the 1.65 rockers (spring installed height, retainer to valve stem seal clearance)and the retainers were probably hitting the seals/guides and bending the PRs. I would go back and talk to him.
