i have only seen a plasma cutter used a couple of times , but in both cases i remember an uneven edge with a fairly large gap. probably too large for welding. i think if you were to clamp and put screws into the two to hold them tight you should be able to use a cut-off wheel to slice them. this would leave a clean edge of about 1/4 inch. maybe some one with more experience than me in this can add more to the subject.
