The original question was "does a Pontiac cost twice as much to build, and not last as long as a Chevrolet?". My experience would suggest the Pontiac will cost more, probably as much as 50 percent, probably not twice. The machine work should be a wash, but the parts for the Chevrolet will be cheaper (economy of scale). However as to longevity, the Pontiac will probably outlast 3 to 4 Chevrolet engines on the street. I have no race experience with either, so will not comment on race conditions.
Others have mentioned devaluation. Putting a Chevrolet engine in a 68 'Bird will cut the value of the Bird by the amount necessary to replace the Chevrolet with a Pontiac, and will decrease the universe of interested buyers by 75 or more percent. Of course, if you never plan on selling the vehicle, this point is moot.
