SDBOB, checked all my old H/O Racing High Output newsletters and found that article in the November 1974 issue. The car was owned by Jim Miller and driven by Don Gamble, they raced at least 4 times a week. They used two different engines they were changed depending on the lenght of the track. A 468" was used on the short 1/3 and 3/8 mile tracks where they needed the torque. On the bottom end of the 468" they used RA-5 rods, 73-74 SD oil pump with restricted oil system with deepened pan with remote oil filter and oil cooler. A smaller engine 440" was used to compete on the larger 1/2 mile dirt tracks. Both engines used the same top end parts, RA-5 heads, cam, and aluminum intake equipped with a 2bbl Holley (Dominator 4bbl carb sawed in half because of class rules). The top end parts were switched between short blocks depending on the track they were racing at. They used a Muncie 4-speed tranny and get this, either a 5.14 or 5.83 rear gears. Jim said that since they started using the 80 lb SD oil pump and restricted oil system, bottom end problems have been non-existent. Talk about serious racers, and this was 30 years ago.
