I did the 301 to 400 swap on my '81 Formula last year. In addition to the harmonic balancer, alternator & power steering brackets listed on the previous posts, you will need both A/C brackets, flywheel, oil dipstick, dipstick tubes, pump to carb fuel line (you could use the old one if you're better at bending them than I am), intake manifold, valley pan, exhaust manifolds, throttle cable bracket, and a drop base air cleaner if you want to close the hood. The EGR and TVS are different also. The transmission & starter will bolt right up. There are probably other items I forgot.
You didn't mention what year your Bird is and whether the 301 is the computer controlled '81 version.
