I used the vinyl dye from Metro Mustang (look them up on Yahoo) and I did the EXACT thing that you are talking about! I changed a 68 auto console and lid from black to teal/aqua and it came out PERFECT!!!! I also did my replacement dash pad and it also came out PERFECT! Performance Years sells the dye also, but I've only used the MEtro Mustang stuff and am completely thrilled with the results!
You need to clean the vinyl really well with a strong cleaner. Then let it dry for 24 hours. Then spray it with the Vinyl Prep spray primer (also from Metro Mustang). Then spray it with the actual color dye. I also clear coated mine with a satin finish clearcoat, but you don't really need to do that. I made sure that I sprayd the console in an area where there wasn't any wind or dust flying around. You have to use a LOT of the dye. Probably 3 full cans of dye to get it really nice.
