I read about a rear mounted turbo on an LT1 car a couple of years ago. To address the loss of exhaust heat, ceramic coating was used. And most of the length of pipe was straight so overall "not much" longer than the twisting and turning usually done under the hood. Never read any comparisons about underhood vs. rear-mounted though.
