Jon,
The 'revived' AVS that E'brock is now selling as the "Thunder Series" is in fact an AFB lower section with an AVS top. It has secondary venturiis, not discharge tubes like the original AVS. So I guess they picked the best attributes of both carbs & combined into one.

As far as the original question goes, I have the E'brock 800 CFM AFB & am more than happy with it. Never had a flat spot. I have a 455, Turbo 350 with manual valve body. I can stomp on it at 15mph in 'D' & it just powers ahead. And that is with a 3.08 axle!
