What I did to get tdc was took out the #1 plug and "bumped" the key to get close and then turned the motor by hand and watched the #1 piston to the top just before it began to go back down. It took a while to catch it at the right time. Once it was at the top of the stroke, I checked the timing mark on the balancer and the rotor on the dist. and everything lined up. I just don't know what else to check.
I have not done a compression test yet. I would like to think that it should be fine on a fresh rebuild. I guess I'll have to anyway.

I asked the mechanic just the other day about the cam and if it was degreed correctly and he was sure beyond a shadow of a doubt that is was correct. But I guess I can check that too.
