Could also be a guide/seat issue.
I have seen seats wear because they are not hardened for today gas and the heat works it's way up the valve and cause guide wear. The ticking could be that. Or if it sat. Just lifters that are worn inside with oil contamination build up. Without a tear down your options are limited.
Then there is the ole Tranny fluid gimic.
