I have always used black electrical tape around the end of the hose and not masking tape. The routine in the vise is the same but I prefer to use an air grinder or Dremel to cut the hose as this is MUCH easier on the arm and tends to fray less than with a hacksaw. Just remember to mark the hose when you slip it in the fitting to check if when you tighten the fitting the hose does not pull out of the end. I always used a pencil and traced around the end of the fitting after the hose has bottomed out in the end.
