It gets that cold in SoCal???
I think I agree with johnta1. Heat conduction into the manifold from the heads (even through the gaskets) probably heats the manifold up as fast as coolant would.
I had rough running early Spring with the KRE heads (no crossover) but I also had pinging under acceleration and hesitation/snatch cruising in OD. I finally accepted that the q'jet was lean and went to 76 jets and 45 rods. It was a big improvement across the board, escecially the cold running. Probably didn't do anything for economy but just a suggestion.
