We obtained a nearly new Edelbrock 750 AFB clone here for testing. After pissing with that thing for weeks we determined that they are NOT a good choice for serious high performance work. Very easy to recalibrate, but the lack of adjustment to the secondary airflap is a "showstopper". They must be set up for whimpy SBC engines because our 455 test engine whipped the flap open so quick it would "stumble/hesitate/bog" no matter how we jetted it. Even so, idle quality was good, off idle and cruise very good, and strong full throttle power once you got past the big "dead spot". Aside from adding or removing weight from the secondary airflap I wouldn't know how to fine tune one for any particular application? With the q-jet it's a matter of seconds to adjust the tension spring for the secondary airflap and secondary metering changes can be made about as quickly without taking the carb apart.
I noticed that Edelbrock came out with the "Thunder Series", AVS design units. I'm certain this move was prompted by complaints about their AFB clones.....Cliff
