Terry,there is a 2 letter code stamped on the axle housing.It will be on the LH drivers side of the axle tube and can be viewed from the back end of your car.It is usually located just below where the brake lines runs and near the tab thats holds the brake line onto the axle housing.I reccommend cleaning the area with sand paper or steel wool,then rubbing white chalk across the area and wiping the excess off to see the code better.
It would be a good idea to remove the rear cover and see what the ratio is,that is stamped on the large ring gear since your GTO is 34 years old it could have been changed and it would be a good idea to put a new cover gasket & rearend oil in it anyways!
