I had a 350 in my 66 Tempest and I switched from the 2:56 posi to a 3:23 and felt much better, 3:55 would be about as much as I would want to go for cruising without switching to a 200r4.
There was an article a few years back in car craft that had a 350 with like 539 hp on 87 gas with edelbrock heads. I won't mention the builders name here but was impressive what could be done with a 350.
