Been there too. I made a round dipstick handle and put a bend in the dipstick so it will always go into the pan and not hit the crank etc. I engraved an arrow on the dipstick that points toward the engine head to index it each time. Then I made up a short dummy stick to put in the tube as a plug. I store the checking stick under the hood on top of my radiator brackets.
