This has been discussed before. The supposed benefit is more even cooling between the cylinder banks. You wouldn't see any actual temperature reduction from doing this, but in theory it helps both heads run at the same temperature. I'm going to be doing this in my new engine.
As far as empirical evidence of whether it really works or not, I'm not aware of any. It's just one of those "looks good on paper and can't hurt anything by trying it" ideas.
