There are 3 different TH400 tail housing lengths:
Short housing - About 4-1/4" long that came in most compact, sport and some mid-size cars ('67 and later GTO and Firebird, '69 and later GP).
Medium length housing - About 9-3/4" long. Used on some mid size and most full-size cars.
Long housing - About 13-1/2" long. Used on Cadillacs and other long wheelbase full-size cars.
I once used a 9-3/4" tailshaft TH400 out of a '74 Grandville in a '76 T/A. It seemed to work fine, but chances are that U-joint life would be shorter than if I used the proper short-tail tranny.
