The thread "10:1 CR '71 reman..." got me thinking...
Thinking about the engine that will go into my 69 goat. From what I can tell, my performance goal is about 400 hp. I'd need to get this in a pump gas engine, and I definitely will not be building this one myself.
From what I can gather, a 455 is likely the way to go if I want to easily achieve 400hp (and naturally plenty of torque at the same time) at pump gas compression.
What can I expect to spend for a long block to fit these requirements, from a reputable builder with quality components? Not looking for a backyard job, but a professionally built unit - some kind of warranty would be great. Emphasis on reliability, not super-tuned edgy power. It would be nice to have it be a little bit mean (hence the 400hp).
Any recommended pro engine builders out there?
I've looked at The Dude's site - he has a basic 455 buildup he's calling 365+ HP for about $3400 (no core charge). He lists a head upgrade for $200, and porting for $325+. I'll guess this will get the unit closer to the 400hp neighborhood? I'm sure his stuff is awesome and I know he had a good reputation. However, someone in the previous thread suggested that a similarly rated setup could be had from a reputable builder for less than $3000? Is this realistic?
Anyone offering a complete engine like this, rather than a long block? If not, how much expense (and time) should I budget for collecting the tin and accessories? FYI, I still want A/C (best of both worlds).
