Hmmm, youve got a stumper  . You didnt happen to use tape on the threads of the sending unit? this could block the ground signal to that. I would start checking the wire for breaks with a circuit tester and if that checks out I would start suspecting the gauge itself. Im not sure how you can go about testing the gauge, im assuming that if you were to ground the brown wire it should make the gauge do something. Another thing maybe if you crimped a new end on the wire maybe the connector got crimped onto the wire shielding and not the wire itslef, that happens sometimes.Not sure what esle to try though, hopefully you get it figured out.
