Dude, you really have to disconnect the headpipe from the exhaust manifold there. My motor is a 66 389 & it's definitely a tight squeeze but it drops thru. I put on a heat-shield to help with hot-start problems, which are caused by being so close to the exhaust! If you do that, put the starter in 1st & wire it up- then put on the heat shield, then reconnect the manifold & pipe.
