B&D sander for $40 at LOWE's, has spring clips on the ends to secure the retangular sections of sandpaper. Thats what I used on the '78.
FWIW....sandpaper is designed to be cut in certain patterns to fit the equipment it will be used with.
For instance, take a sheet of sandpaper and cut in three sections. each 1/3 is cut to fit that particular sander pad perfectly.
