Last year I had the 2801 in my '65 389 +.40 with '68 #16 heads street clean-up (like a 400), '65 tripower, repro RA exh manifolds with 2.5 exhaust and DynoMax. The cam idled in my 389 like a 068 - it sounds basically stock with a hint of lope. Nice off-idle and strong mid-range, with my combination it was done before 6k. Plenty of vacuum for my power brakes. I was able to set the idle at spec warm but with my alum flywheel it was much happier to drive around town at 750-800. I think this one should pass smog for you, and you may be able to go bigger but always hard to say for sure.... Good luck
