What you describe is actually the correct factory setup. The 3 prong sensor actually serves multiple purposes. One prong is to drive your temperature gauge, another prong is to drive the idiot light and the 3rd prong is to activate the TCS solenoid. Either your gauge is busted, or this sender is malfunctioning.
