I believe you're not getting a good ground.
Is the engine block/distributor grounded good?
Also the dash gauges should have a ground wire also. Make sure it's good.
I think when you put the new dist. and MSD in that you have a poor ground,so the electicity is trying to find the least resistance back to ground,which is the guage wiring.
