Interesting tidbit about the Silverbird. My friend has a 301 block that was ordered from Pontiac by Richie Morlock, of the Herslow and Morlock Super Stock team.
Funny thing is, this block was specially cast with no coolant passages. That's right; a solid 301 block. Go figure.
