For now I just remove the ignitionn coil cable and for extended leaving i take the battery away with me. I guess if they figure out the coil wire and have a battery with them, along with picking the lock, it's theres. But i do want more security for her.
I'm thinking about rigging up a standard remote system (say what you'd get with a standard remote starter kit) to 'activate' my ignition's starting ability.
Here's how:
The way my bulldog remote starter on my other car works is when you hit start, it activates current through various wires (namely, the "Run" and "Accessory" lines), then a second later powers the "START" (power to starter) wire momentarily to start the car. After that, it continues to power the Run/Accessory lines for about (5,10, or 15 minutes, - programmable by user). That would be the amount of time (5,10, or 15) you want the car to stay on if you had remote started it.
What i'd do:
I would hook it up so that when I hit RemoteStart on my remote, it would close the power circuit to my Starter - Thus pressing the "remote start' button does nothing BUT let the car function as it normally would stock. However, without the remote start having been hit, the connection to the starter is cut by the divice. As mentioned earlier, you'd be able to program your "Window of ignition" to 5,10,or 15 minutes as to how long you want the ability to start the car to be there before it locks itself away again.
I guess a problem with this would be that nothing stops the thief from fixing the wiring himself so it works as it should but it would take effort and some tools and it would be time consuming, they'd probably move on.
I'd also have to check to make sure the divice can handle the current passed to the starter. Usually they are fused at 10 Amps, i'm not sure how much the starter's power line carries... judging from the guage wires going to it, it might be a lot more, meaning maybe the remote starting divices are incapable to handle that much current without burning out?
What scares me a lot too is that even if a thief couldn't get the car to start, he might be mad/mean enough to scratch it or bang a dent into it! I guess that would beat a stolen car for sure though.
