Tom- Steve's true expertise was computers, not engines and cars. He made money in computers, then used it to stock up on vintage car parts and sell them at swap meets. Sure, he was able to buy a lot of neat pieces- but that and 10 cents buys a coffee. I spoke to someone who knows him personally, and according to him, Steve got all that stuff from Mickey's estate for like $1500 back when.
There is a picture of Steve's exact stuff in Pete McCarthy's second book, because I also spoke to Steve and he told me yes, that was his stuff- so evidently he was trying to sell it, before he found out exactly what it was.
I tried to buy 303 RA V heads from Steve long ago during the pre-internet days, and I found him difficult to deal with. I'll let it go at that. He's basically a swap meet parts dealer.
