I agree with you completely. Although the two terms are generally considered one in the same, they aren't. I suspect that twenty years ago, you could use the term "numbers matching", and everyone would assume that you meant original. I have no intention of taking the guy to court, and since the car has only increased in value, I don't suspect that I'd have much of an argument.
