My first instinct is to agree with engineer on this one. If it were a loss of ground or bad harness, etc. it most likely would not clear up when you pulled one of the bulbs...possible but not likely. I'd say that one of the sockets is bad and needs to be isolated by trying them one by one.
The only way I see it being something other than the socket or bulb is if the harness has a short that's only in the circuit when the bulb is inserted into the socket. Long shot.
Edit- Oops, I misread the original post. I thought it cleared up when you pulled one of the bulbs, not the brake light switch...Still, it's a logical start to pull the bulbs as described.
