To answer you questions, I like the chain set up better than the gear setup for one reason... machinability! While Iam sure that the gear setup works very well, to machine it can be a real pain for setting it up for a roller bearing cam plate. The gear setup is hardened and can be quite difficult to machine for my cam plate. It can be done, but it takes longer to do. Its also more expensive to the customer that supplies the gear setup to me to be machined. I will machine your existing timing set for $150 plus shipping (chain timing set) and $225 plus shipping for a gear setup.
The chain setup is (in my opinion) quieter. Even the quiet gear setup has some "whine" to it. And some people like that. Its what pleases you that matters. Thats what counts.
