To answer the other part of your question....You don't have to remove the entire front clip....but it helps.
It's a matter of choice really. You can work a little harder getting the core support out frontwards if the fenders are in place or you can work a little harder by having to remove and replace the fenders.
I have removed the core support on my Trans Am without disturbing the fenders and hood. On my GTO, I removed the entire clip.
