The booster pump setup works great, without the bypass, for your application of priming the carb and occassional street/strip performance use. Both pumps are equipped with poppet style valves that yield to pressure, allowing either pump to flow thru the other. Your 69 should have a small fuel return line off the mechanical pump, now that I think about it.
The "valves" do provide some flow restriction, which may be Tom's reason for recommending the bypass. Fuel pressure should be checked and regulated, if necessary. I use a small "Spectre" regulator, avaiable @ Autozone for about $20, to keep the tri-pwr pressure down to 4#.
I have driven the 4450# GP cross-country in July, and ran 14.45 @ 97mph @ 6,000 ft. with this combo pump setup, without fuel supply problems.
