Just a little more proof. The original Pontiac 10 bolt in my '67 is 55.5" flange to flange as is the Chevy 10 bolt out of a 1969 El Camino I have sitting on the garage floor at the moment.
So this would mean that the earlier rears were only 54.5" flange to flange?
