just to use the 400 and 455 for example, which is what you should go with if you you're looking for power, and you are because you are asking the questions.
a 400 and 455 typically will make the same HP, but the 455 will make it at a lower RPM, and make a ton more torque to boot.
a 455 Pontiac makes an excellent street engine because they like a higher gear ratio than a 400, which means you can be just as fast, and still cruise on the highway.
you can also stroke your 400 out to a 455 with an aftermarket crank...400s are much more plentiful than a 455.
