I'm about to put a cd player and speakers in mine this week so I don't yet have the pics, but I'll give you a quick rundown of the radio guy's suggestions.
Mount the cd player under the seat or in the glove box and run a wired control panel to the ash tray so it's accessible. This control panel according to him is just like the panel you'd find on the back of a boat (think diving platform off the back) to control the deck mounted in the front of the boat. Haven't seen the hardware yet, so I'm not sure what all controls can be had (volume, seek, etc), but based on what he did with the speakers, I believe this guy could pull off anything. My goal was modern sound from a stock look.
Just to comment on the original point of the post regarding kick panel speakers...
I had the dash-mounted 5x7 was replaced with 2 4" two ways which compliment the rear 6x9's really well. 200 watt Clarion deck. Very rich sound for country and rock music.
