Bench seat was lighter, yes. Pontiac specifies on the AMA form that there is a 12 pound weight reduction for bench seat over buckets. No big deal. Doesn't explain the hundereds of pounds claimed.

The console was an option to cars with buckets, not included with them.

I attached these two pages so you can see the factory curbs weights of these 71 A-bodies. The second pic (page 26) is where you can calculate the weight based on options by either adding or subtracting the option. Do the math.
