The way it works is: as the solenoid pulls in, it forces the Bendix drive out to the flywheel. As the solenoid plunger bottoms, a large contact inside, connects the battery to the starter motor.
If the Bendix sticks out for some reason, such as the snap ring retainer, the electrical contact to the motor will stay connected, constantly spinning the motor.
