You'd be well advised to upgrade the trans... especially since you've got it all apart now....

Not true, the later 2nd-gen T/As came with a TH350 trans behind the 400, no room for the TH400 when cat converters came on the scene in '75. These were low-compression 185HP smogger 400 engines, so not a lot of stress on the trans.
An upgrade to a TH400 would be nice (I would), but not entirely necessary.
