Another thought is it could have been a "Dealer installed option"...
A friend tried to order a new 74 GTO with an SD motor, the factory said no, but the dealer offered to install one brand new. The only reason he didn't do it was the dealer wouldn't offer him anything for the brand new 350 they were taking out.
He took the car home and put a 455 in it himself.
