A trick for removing the rear axels if you don't have a slide hammer or want to mess with one is
1) remove wheel
2) remove brake drum
3) remove 4 nuts that attach wheel bearing retainer
4) install brake drum back on the axel backwards
5) install wheel stud nuts loose as possible
6) use brake drum as slide hammer
I have used this method many, many times and it is actually faster and easier than using a slide hammer to pull the axels. I was taught this by an "old timer" years ago. Funny now I'm an old timer.
