This week I looked at a 67 Firebird standard manifold installation and noticed that the passenger side manifold outlet hole was quite small. The flared downpipe was too big for the manifold. A donut type gasket is certainly a solution. With this particular Pypes installation, they solved the problem with the addition of a sleeve insert. Why an overwhelming amount of installations don't require this sleeve/donut addition and why apparently some do, is a mystery at this point. However, one thing that is very clear that has come out of this topic:
1. DO NOT grind the pipe flare down with standard manifolds when the pipe flare is bottoming on the manifold. Even a slight amount of grinding will cause the flange to be too big for the flare. The solution is the addition of a donut gasket or sleeve. Anyone who got this advice on a standard manifold got bad advice. Contact Pypes for replacements. Our appologies.
2. DO grind the pipe flare down with HO/RA manifolds if the flare is bottoming on the studs when tightening.
Pypes is working on making a sleeve that will be included with all Pontiac standard manifold downpipes.
