if it's an itermittent drivability problem that doesn't mean the engine's tired. it means the car needs a good tune up / going over, possibly a timing chain. if the engine needs a major overhaul it's going to run bad all the time, smoke blue, have low oil pressure and probably make some noises.

the lack of power might be the result of 2:42 gears and a poor state of tune.

i'd start with a compression test and go from there.
