There was no need to 'reef down' the engine to get all the slack out of the chain. I made the bracket that bolts to the head first, then attached the chain to it. After that I pulled the chain tight by hand and marked the hole location on the frame bracket that was already bolted down tight.

I removed the frame bracket, then drilled and tapped the chain attachment point. As long as you carefully mark and drill the hole in exactly the right spot the chain will be nice and tight.

Both of the bolts holding the chain are 3/8-24 Grade 8. In order to keep the bolts snug in their holes as well as to properly locate the chain attachment points it's mandatory that both the chain attachment holes be tapped for threads, not just drilled as through-holes. The bolts also have a nut on the backside to further insure that the bolts don't come loose or wiggle around in the brackets.

Any slack that you can see in the the chain now is the result of about 10 years of racing, from the chain wearing and stretching slightly over the years. You can still barely move the chain.
