Since you obviously have all of the books, why not answer the man's question  ?

Timing is adjusted with the vacuum line off the distributor and plugged. Raise the idle slightly, if needed, to prevent the motor from stalling when setting the initial timing. If you need another vacuum port, a "T" fitting in an existing line will suffice.
