Even though it is not stock appearing, a lot of the Evans Cooling water pumps have a bleed walve installed at the top of the water pump. I used to do the same thing with a drilled and tapped hole at the top of the aluminum timing cover housing. Once I bled all of the air out of the water pump housing of the timing cover I would use a simple bolt and a Holley Fuel Bowl Screw Gasket to seal the bleed. Cheap, works like a charm and eliminates the trapped air in the timing cover/water pump.
I doubt is that trick will have the responses of George's clearance mod but post up if you try it and it works. You can do the drilling if the pump is off and you stuff a couple of rags in the open area of the timing cover to catch the aluminum chips from the drilling.
